{"id":42,"date":"2008-10-11T02:00:00","date_gmt":"2008-10-11T07:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.inverseflux.com\/2008\/10\/11\/linux-desktop-os\/"},"modified":"2008-10-11T02:00:00","modified_gmt":"2008-10-11T07:00:00","slug":"linux-desktop-os","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/inverseflux.com\/blog\/2008\/10\/linux-desktop-os\/","title":{"rendered":"Linux &#8211; Desktop OS?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I still feel that this operating system could be one of the greatest out there.\u00a0 I could go on about stability, security and many other topics.\u00a0 I\u2019ll stick to community on this post.<\/p>\n<p>Though, predominantly a Windows user, I\u2019ve found myself \u2018tinkering\u2019 with linux more then a few times.\u00a0 Now don\u2019t get me wrong here, I\u2019ve managed linux servers, personally and professionally, but I&#8217;m still in a quandary as to whether I could make a move to this as a general OS for my living room.\u00a0 I think the single most problem I have with the idea of linux as a desktop OS, is that the community that supports it is more then elitist in nature.\u00a0 You think I exagurate? Head over to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.slashdot.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">SlashDot<\/a> and you\u2019ll see what I mean.\u00a0 I complain a lot about a lot of things, but I am nothing in comparison to the average nerd out there with a chip on their shoulder who would post on that site.\u00a0 It is unreal.<\/p>\n<p>I wonder how many petabytes have been used to store the word shit?\u00a0 Probably less then I\u2019d think.\u00a0 Well, I hope anyway.\u00a0 Though it is a great word.\u00a0 Random, I have ADHD, blame the disease not the person.<\/p>\n<p>Now that I am totally off topic here.\u00a0 Linux as a desktop OS.\u00a0 Right, lets all call our mothers and help them compile the new kernel released for Gentoo?\u00a0 Really?\u00a0 You think they\u2019re going to understand that?\u00a0 Even Ubuntu or gOS, come on people.\u00a0 Get a grip.\u00a0 I for one can appreciate that linux can be a great operating system to do a lot of great things, but I don\u2019t ever see it getting the market penetration that Microsoft or Apple has.<\/p>\n<p>Uh oh, I said Apple.<\/p>\n<p>Apple isn\u2019t linux intarweb users\u2026 its FreeBSD.\u00a0 Not a comparison.\u00a0 Wait, sure it is, how could I ever say that?\u00a0 Well, I guess when Ubuntu has a $100mil to blow on some of the most amazing designers in the world, then we\u2019ll see it being used by everyone.\u00a0 Apple users aren\u2019t elitists!\u00a0 Oh, wait\u2026 yeah, that guy \u2013 on the iPhone.\u00a0 Total fucking tools(No offense Kevin Rose, you seem cool, heh).\u00a0 It amazes me how far status and style has gone with that electronics company.\u00a0 Didn\u2019t Sony do something similar with the walkman?\u00a0 I guess they were able to ride that high horse for years as well.<\/p>\n<p>Wow, I digress a lot.\u00a0 All in all, Ubuntu has a chance, but they need hardware and style to go hand in hand, and then I think it will have made it to the big time.\u00a0 I guess we\u2019ll see how far the rabbit hole goes.<\/p>\n<p>PC Load Letter?\u00a0 What the fuck does that mean?\u00a0 A heroes work is never done&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Peace.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I still feel that this operating system could be one of the greatest out there.\u00a0 I could go on about stability, security and many other topics.\u00a0 I\u2019ll stick to community on this post.
